Our relationship to beauty products says so much about ourselves: do we spend a fortune on tubes smaller than our pinkies that promise to erase any proof that we once smiled? Have we been buying the same stuff, month in, month out, since age fifteen? Do we follow the (totally unbiased) magazine reviews and share in the enthusiasm for this or that new molecule? Do we lose sleep over sulphates, chlorides, glycerides, and nano-particles ?
Do we go full granola and… make our own?
If you’re in the latter camp, but feel intimidated by the long lists of exotic ingredients you would have to special order and then store in some cabinet until they rot or stale, this post is for you!
I’ve put together this list of quick recipes for homemade all-natural cosmetics, selecting ones that are very easy to follow. You can often make them your own by swapping ingredients for ones that will work best for your skin type, and the best thing is, they mostly use ingredients you already have at home!
No excuse not to give them a go, and any of these would make a lovely homemade gift this holiday season.
You can save a bundle on beauty products when you make them on your own at home. Some of these recipes show you how to use simple ingredients that are low cost, while others show you how to stretch out high-quality ingredients so they last longer, saving you money that way.
1. Coconut Oil Honey Hair Mask
Coconut oil and honey combine to make a mask that your hair won’t soon forget. The richness of the coconut oil, combined with the antibacterial nature of the honey give this a consistency that feels amazing while applying it, and leaves your hair feeling amazing.
2. Tea Tree and Lemon Scrub
This scrub will keep you feeling refreshed with the scent of lemon combined with the pine-like smell of tea tree oil. The lemon acts as an astringent for the skin, and the tea tree oil can help with acne and redness.
3. Thyme Pimple Cream
Stop buying expensive acne treatments and put Mother Nature to work on your breakouts. Thyme essential oil brings its healing properties to help blemishes go away more quickly and jojoba oil is soothing to the skin.

4. Summer Lotion
Keep your skin looking great all summer long with this lotion specifically designed for the warmer months. It contains a mix of ingredients like calendula and chamomile so that your skin feels great even when the temperature starts climbing.
5. Custom Color Nail Polish
Creating your own custom nail polish can save you from having to pay retail prices, and allows you to have control over the color that you just can’t get from pre-made polishes. A unique way of using clear polish mixed with eye shadow for just the right color you want.
While I’m thankful there are more companies today making safer beauty products, the price tag that comes with them isn’t easy to swallow. I have a few natural store-bought beauty products I can’t do without now that I’ve found them (this one for example), but it helps to save money on other products by making them myself at home.
If the thought of making your own makeup or lotion is overwhelming, just start the way I did… one recipe at a time. The 7 recipes below are really quite simple and quick to make. In fact, if you have just 7 common DIY beauty ingredients in your cupboard, you can make over 20 DIY beauty products!
If you aren’t already, consider making these DIY beauty products instead of buying them:
1. Deodorant
homemade deodorant bar recipeI’ll admit… I didn’t think homemade deodorant could possibly work. I’d tried natural versions and they weren’t effective so I didn’t have high hopes. Still, if you want to avoid applying aluminum and other additives linked to cancer to your armpits (not to mention blocking the natural function of sweating), switching to a natural deodorant is an important health step to take.
To my surprise, this recipe works incredibly well and is very inexpensive and simple to make.
With just coconut oil, baking soda, and optional arrowroot and shea butter, you can make a deodorant that works for your body type.
Here are two recipes to try for smooth deodorants, and you can also make deodorant bars with the same ingredients.
Sensitive to baking soda or tried this before and got a rash? Try applying a simple magnesium oil spray as a deodorant… it works!
